🛠️ Mercedes-Benz S-Class W222 Retrofit Guide: 2015–2017 to 2018–2020 (Kit)

Upgrading your 2015–2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class W222 to the 2020 facelift interior offers both visual modernization and improved functionality. As an engineer with two decades at Mercedes-Benz R&D, I’ve personally overseen many such transformations — and our OEM Retrofit Kit Option 3 provides the most technically sound and factory-accurate solution for this upgrade.

This retrofit is particularly focused on upgrading:

  • The Digital Instrument Cluster

  • The Head Unit HU5.5

  • The Mouse Controller (Touchpad Interface)

  • Steering wheel w222 2020

     — all integrated with factory wiring standards and ECU protocols.

🔧 OEM Kit Components Overview

  1. Digital Instrument Cluster (Widescreen, 12.3")

    • Replaces analog or hybrid cluster with fully digital display.

    • Resolution: 1920x720, LVDS interface.

    • Real-time data visualization: speed, navigation, ADAS, trip, media.

    • Requires coding adaptation to SCU (Steering Control Unit) and EZS (Ignition Switch Unit).

  2. Head Unit HU5.5 (NTG 5.5)

    • Updated infotainment system with faster processor and new UI.

    • Integrated support for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Navigation.

    • Interfaces with digital cluster via LVDS and CAN bus.

    • Requires activation through XENTRY or remote SCN coding.

  3. Mouse Controller (Touchpad with Rotary Knob)

    • Updated 2018+ model with capacitive input and gesture support.

    • Controls both HU5.5 and instrument cluster via central COM module.

    • Physically compatible with W222 center console; plug-and-play with minor harness adaptation.

  4. W222 Steering Wheel 2020 + Retrofit Adaptor

    • Enables new-generation steering wheels to function with older SCU.

    • Retains paddle shift, audio, and cruise control buttons.

    • Required for compatibility with digital cluster scrolling and drive mode switching.

  5. USB Interface Module

    • High-speed data transfer and fast-charging capability.

    • Supports CarPlay/Android Auto.

    • Mounts directly in place of older USB/AUX unit.

  6. IC Adaptor (Instrument Cluster Interface Adapter)

    • Converts signal structure from old CAN formatting to LVDS-compatible protocol.

    • Essential for enabling digital cluster without replacing entire CAN backbone.

  7. Drive Assistant Button Panel (Facelift Version)

    • New button layout for DISTRONIC, Parking Pilot, and Lane Keep Assist.

    • Matches the interface language of the 2018+ facelift UI.

🧠 Technical Installation Steps

Step 1: Preparation

  • Disconnect battery (safety first).

  • Remove dashboard trim, center console, and OEM cluster.

  • Backup coding from original cluster using Vediamo or DTS Monaco.

Step 2: Hardware Replacement

  • Install the Digital Cluster into the dash panel. Secure all LVDS and CAN connectors.

  • Replace original head unit with HU5.5, ensuring antenna, LVDS, GPS, USB, and MOST are connected.

  • Install the new mouse controller, aligning the plug and fascia with the center console.

  • Connect the IC Adaptor between the cluster and CAN line.

  • Replace old USB module and install the new USB interface with updated wiring.

Step 3: Steering Wheel Compatibility

  • If upgrading the steering wheel later, install the retrofit adaptor at this stage.

  • Confirm compatibility with SCU and ESP modules.

Step 4: Button Panel

  • Replace the original assistant control panel with the facelift version.

  • Connect CAN lines and confirm communication with driver assistance modules.

Step 5: Coding & Adaptation

  • Launch XENTRY, or DTS Monaco.

  • Code the new instrument cluster (IC213) to the vehicle’s VIN.

  • Adapt HU5.5 using SCN online coding or prepared offline files.

  • Test all functions: Drive modes, navigation on cluster, media display, assist features.

  • Calibrate steering wheel controls (if updated).

✅ Post-Retrofit Functionality

Once properly installed and coded, your upgraded 2015–2017 W222 S-Class will feature:

  • Full digital instrument display with animated menus.

  • Modern touchpad interface with responsive control.

  • Enhanced navigation, multimedia, and connectivity.

  • Seamless integration with driver assistance systems and ambient settings.
